FM Logistic makes first use of new tool for measuring carbon emissions from logistics sitesFrance
June 4, 2019 - The French logistics provider FM Logistic has started to use a new tool called REff to measure greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of logistics facilities, such as warehouses and distribution centres. The tool will be tested for six months at FM Logistic warehouses and cross-docking facilities in twelve countries, mostly in Europe. FM Logistic is planning to disclose warehouse-related emissions after the test period.
The REff tool (Resource Efficiency at Logistics Sites) was developed by Germany’s applied research institute Fraunhofer IML. It enables logistics providers and shippers to determine the annual carbon footprint of individual logistics sites (kg CO2e per year) as well as one average emission intensity value (kg CO2e per tonne cargo).
The tool and underlying methodology are designed to help the logistics industry adopt generally accepted measurement practices for emissions of logistics sites.
“While there are industry standards to measure GHG emissions from transport, there has not been a globally accepted approach on how to calculate greenhouse gas emissions attributed to logistics buildings. Together with our partners, we have filled this gap and welcome the initiative of FM Logistic, the first logistics operator to use the REff tool in real-life conditions,” says Dr. Kerstin Dobers, Senior Scientist, Fraunhofer IML.
REff follows the methodology published in January 2019 by Fraunhofer IML in the "Guide for greenhouse gas emissions accounting at logistics sites" (https://bit.ly/2XziCZR).
Fraunhofer IML cooperates in this field with associations and initiatives that support the adoption of standard GHG reporting protocols in the transport and logistics industry. These include EcoTransIT World, the LEARN project and the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC), of which FM Logistic is a new member.
FM Logistic aims to reduce the carbon emissions of its logistics sites by 20% by 2022. An objective made possible by its cooperation with NG Concept, its sister company specialising in logistics real estate. The two companies today announced their adhesion to the Charter for energy efficiency in the public and private tertiary buildings, which is sponsored by the French government. All new FM Logistic buildings aim for HQE or LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design) certification.
Fraunhofer IML (Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics), based in Dortmund, Germany, is one of 72 institutes and research units of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Europe’s largest application-oriented research organisation. For more information: https://bit.ly/2UKTz9l
