Today’s supply chains are defined by speed and complexity. However, the frequent disruptions affecting global trade, along with shifting customer needs, mean resilience in logistics is essential. To achieve this, an increasing number of businesses are turning to control towers.

With data at its heart, such a process must handle large volumes of data efficiently and get every detail correct, which “is ultimately what the control tower is set up to do – it centralises all the information needed to ensure a smooth delivery”, he says.

“Each time we receive an order for the same customer, the system recalculates the optimal solution dynamically – which means that until cutoff I can rerun for new orders and determine the optimal solution,” Demirdis says.
Another advantage is that clients’ logistics can run in line with their emissions preferences, with the control tower acting as an environmental calculator that allows them to simulate the carbon footprint of different transport options.
A control tower also bridges gaps across the supply chain by pulling logistics data from all stakeholders to create a single source of information regardless of the technological readiness of those involved. And, says Demirdis, perhaps most significantly, a control tower approach is something that firms of all sizes can use.
“It’s not a one-size-fits-all model – implementation is modular and adapts to the client’s internal readiness, scale and requirements,” he says. “A client might have an excellent internal planning tool or a preferred customs broker, so they only need FM Logistic to handle basic visibility, export documentation and track-and-trace – which the control tower can also do.”
